Top 2010 High School Arms Make Their Way To NCAA

With the signing deadline far past and the fall season underway, many top tier programs are evaluating their talent and seeing the treasures of their recruiting class perform at the NCAA level. Although fall provides some insight to the coaches, it's the spring that matters so be sure to check out the blog come spring time when these pitchers are in full form and have adapted to collegiate baseball. Of the pitchers that made it to school, two of them were first round picks respectively, and nearly 1/5 of Perfect Games top 100 found their way to college.

The two first round picks were Dylan Covey, 14th overall to the Milwaukee Brewers, who is now at the Univeristy of San Diego and Karsten Whitson, 9th overall to the San Diego Padres, now in "The Swap" in Florida. Both Whitson and Covey are big bodied RHP that can throw in the mid-90's with ease.

Joining Whitson at Florida are Keenan Kish and Daniel Gibson, both who are big time recruits for the Gators. Kish a right handed pitcher and Gibson a lefty, join Whitson on Saturday at 2 pm as the three are pitching in the fall game for the Gators.

Speaking of lefties, both Kevin Ziomek of Vanderbilt and Jimmy Hodgskin of Troy were some of the top lefties in the 2010 class. Hodgskin had a successful fall, as he allowed only 1 run on 1 hit when his Troy team took on the Ontario Blue Jays. Ziomek who was in the 88-91 range in high school seemed to have bulked up a bit in the summer/fall as he sat 91-92 this fall, touching 94.

Georgia Tech got two flamethrowers in DeAndre Smelter and Matthew Grimes, both RHP. Standford, who already has a stacked pitching staff behind junior Brett Mooneyham and sophomore Mark Appel, added AJ Vanegas who played on the USA U-18 team this summer. Also on that USA team with Vanegas was John Simms who made his way to Rice after posting a 4-0 mark this summer with a .96 ERA.

Big Scott Frazier, a 5th round pick by the Phillies last year, made his way to Pepperdine where he has been up to 94 this fall and had scouting projecting him to be in the high 90's thanks in part to his 6'6 frame. Ryne Stanek of Arkansas threw well this spring, pitching 6.1 innings allowing on 2 earned runs and striking out seven. Other pitchers that headlined there recruiting class include Jon Keller to Nebraska, Adam Plutko to UCLA, Adam Duke to Oregon State, Eric Jaffe to Cal, who look to make a splash in their final season and Randy Leblanc to Tulane.
